The problem with “pH‑balanced” cleansing and why it can still leave skin dry


A lot of skincare marketing leans on one idea: “pH‑balanced = gentle.” That sounds right because healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic (the “acid mantle”), and that acidity plays real roles in barrier function and skin chemistry. 

The trick is that pH is only one variable.

Here’s what research and dermatology literature consistently show:

Traditional “true soap” bars are inherently alkaline (often with a pH of 8.5–11), and this higher pH can be rough on compromised or sensitive skin, especially if the soap is not cured for a sufficient length of time. 

Synthetic detergent cleansers (“syndets”) were developed as a milder alternative, often formulated in a range closer to skin pH (commonly ~5.5–7). This is just one aspect, though.

A cleanser can be “skin pH” and still be irritating or drying depending on the surfactants and formulation chemistry. pH isn’t the whole story, and it can be used as a “comfort label” while the underlying cleanser system still strips.

If you’ve ever stepped out of the shower and felt:

-tightness
-“squeaky clean” that turns into dryness
-a need to immediately apply lotion (or reapply all day)

…you’re not alone. This is a common experience when cleansing removes too much of what your skin needs to stay comfortable. 

Two important, under-discussed mechanisms show up in the research:

Cleansers don’t just remove dirt and oil, they can remove skin components too.
Surfactants can extract lipids and natural moisturizing factors, weakening barrier function. 

Some surfactant material can remain after rinsing and continue to disrupt the lipid structure over time, sapping barrier performance and requiring more maintenance from internal systems (draining the body’s ability to focus on other repairs).

And in real life, the “rinse‑off world” gets messier: for example, a clinical study found that washing with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in hard water increased SLS deposits on skin and those deposits were linked to higher transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and irritation. That matters because if the barrier is literally leaking (higher TEWL), your skin can feel “dry” even when you’re using a lot of products. 

What the research says about cleansers, residues, and “barrier-friendly” moisture
pH‑matched doesn’t always mean mild, and can even backfire in specific formulas.

That is the heart of the “pH trick”:
A label can say “pH‑balanced,” while the cleanser system can still be aggressive, and your skin still pays the bill.

“Gentle enough” often comes with a cleansing tradeoff for very oily or heavily coated skin. Matching skin pH and aiming for gentleness does not automatically mean you get the best cleansing performance for every situation. Nor does it ensure effectiveness against irritations.

In contrast, barrier repair strategies discussed in dermatology literature often emphasize supplying lipids similar to those in the stratum corneum (ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids) or supporting the processes that maintain barrier integrity. 

Research on topical oils shows that some oils can penetrate and meaningfully change lipid composition in the skin. For example, a clinical study found ostrich oil to be a valuable source of bioactives with its unique chemical composition rich in omega fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins. It was also observed to penetrate/participate in the epidermal barrier (with many beneficial effects). 

Why the cleanse‑and‑coat cycle can leave more “dead skin” sitting on the barrier

Dry, uncomfortable skin isn’t just “missing lotion.” Dry skin often involves abnormal shedding.

Dermatology resources describe that dry skin can involve retention of dead skin cells, meaning the cells don’t shed cleanly, so texture and visible flaking can increase. 

When hydration is low, enzymes involved in breaking down the “glue” between corneocytes don’t function optimally, which can make skin look rough and cause aggregated dry keratinocytes to become visible as scaly dead skin. 

If your routine repeatedly:

-strips the barrier, then
-coats it with a temporary seal, then
-strips again…

…it’s easy to see how you end up with lingering roughness and a constant need for “more steps.” The research supports the barrier dynamics behind that pattern. 

The answer for people who want less: 
A 2‑step, oil‑compatible routine, with bar soap + natural balm fortified with natural actives.

If you’re searching phrases like “best natural soap for sensitive skin” or “bar soap that doesn’t dry out skin,” what you’re really asking is:

“How do I get clean without starting the tightness‑lotion‑tightness loop again?”

If you are extremely oily, wearing heavy water‑resistant sunscreen daily, or exposed to heavy grime, you may need to adjust how you cleanse (frequency, temperature, duration) because mildness vs. sebum removal is a real tradeoff in cleanser performance. 
If you have eczema/psoriasis/dermatitis or another medical condition, you should treat product changes as supportive skincare, not medical care, and patch test when needed.

How We Do It

Step one: cleanse like you’re protecting the barrier
Use lukewarm water (hot water can worsen surfactant irritation dynamics). 
Rinse well to minimize residual surfactant exposure. 
If your skin is reactive, start with the Unscented option (no essential oils - for sensitive skin). 

Step two: apply balm the so it may penetrate and work from within.
Moisturizers that function only as a “seal” can feel good but often reset immediately when you stop using them. 

Balms work best when you:

-apply a small amount while skin is slightly damp
-treat it as “lipid nutrition” rather than “coat it and forget it”
-keep the ingredient list simple when your goal is comfort and calm 

Step three: give the feedback loop time
Barrier recovery isn’t instant. If you’ve been in a strip‑and‑coat routine for years, give your skin a couple weeks of consistency before judging, especially if flaking or roughness has been showing up (often linked to retained dead skin cells and abnormal shedding in dry skin states).
